The best 20 Velvet Sofa looks

When I was growing up we used to have a velvet green 3 seater sofa and two large armchairs, it all looked a bit art deco to me, they were very nice to sleep on but at the time everyone else was looking at 21st century design so I was less than impressed. Ask me again now and if I could ship those pieces over to my house, I would, without a second thought. Too bad then that my mother still loves this suite and will not part with it. It makes me green, with envy.

So if I were to choose a new sofa, would I go for lush velvet fabric? Yes!

1. VELVET GREEN SOFA AND PLANTS (see photo above)

Whatever this room is missing in wall art, it's gained in plant power. Ferns, palms and banana leaves around the green velvet sofa (and yes, that's exactly the colour of my grandma's sofa that my mom inherited and which she refuses to let go!). Don't go overboard on accessories, as the plants already add the colour and texture that is needed to balance the dark background.

2. VELVET GREEN SOFA AND PLANTS #2

Still in the green but in this example, the plants are in the form of wallpaper that has been added in a bookcase as well as on a lampshade. Because this room is heavy on the accessories (vases, cushions, accent tables), the stylist has kept the wall art very neutral in an abstract theme that has the same colour as the wall.

3. GREEN ON GREEN

In this more traditional setting, the owners went for green velvet against a vivid green wall.

4. OH OH OCHRE

Ochre, mustard, all these colours mix well with grey and blue walls that are still here to stay. Do you recognise this room? Oh come on! It belongs to none other than Abigail Ahern, Queen of Cool. I love how the sofa lifts the gold hues on the carpet as well as on the coffee table.

5. BURNT ORANGE + HIGH CEILINGS

Burnt orange velvet on dark wooden floors in this room with the endless ceilings and the ghost chandelier. A room full of architectural interest and art in large dimension sitting comfortably on the mantlepiece. I love that the room has so many elements yet still feels minimalist. The house belongs to food stylist Mish Lilley and it's a Victorian terrace in melbourne. Uber. Cool.

6. BURNT ORANGE + GREY

This beautiful plush velvet sofa from Loaf is on the money. As comfortable as it looks, this sofa is one that most households would be able to easily add. If your walls are in a lighter colour (or even better white) imagine how well this sofa would go with an IKEA Stockhold rug. Yes, that black and white stripey one.

8. PURPLE DELIGHT

I find lilac walls quite relaxing and so I can imagine reading a good (interiors) book on this sofa. A great room with a few and eclectic pieces of art (love the butterfly collection). And just look at the green lampshade next to this amethyst like sofa from Arlo and Jacob!

9. FUCHSIA PINK IN AN ENGLISH HOME

This has to be one of my favourites. Am I too traditional? Too old? Whatever, I am drawn to this scheme because it feels comfortable and well lived in. It feels like HOME. If only there was a coffee table with afternoon tea sandwiches and cream sconces. Yum!

10. GO FOR THE ANTIQUE LOOK

It could be a sofa you inherited from dear auntie Jo or a vintage find on EBAY still carrying its original fabric. You can easily adapt this type of velvet sofa in a home where antiques are loved and vintage finds create an alsmost bohemian look.

11. ECLECTIC PINK

The much deeper and darker shade of pink is a welcomed focal point in this case, considering the whitewashed brick walls, the flooring and everything else that contributes to a casual and eclectic look.

12. SOPHISTICATED GREY

In this image from Fey Handmade, this stylish two seater in charcoal grey is sitting against an equally dark wall. Moody, you might say. Grown up, I will respond. The pink cushions and throws are a bit tongue in cheek if you ask me. This wonderful sofa could work so well in most rooms. The small PEPPY sofa by Loaf.com in pigeon grey is similar.

13. NO CURVES FOR THE RETRO LOOK

Mid century furniture is having a come back in 2015 so combine with a vintage clock and kidney shaped coffee table and you are ready to step back in time. Now where's my gin and tonic?

14. A VELVET SOFA + GALLERY WALL

This is fresh, colourful and will get your guests talking. The clash of colours (emerald and pink, but you can try other combinations like blue and yellow) is wonderful and the choice of artwork can be the inspiration for the colours you will choose. No where do they hide their radiators, I wonder.

15. 70s CHIC

If your decor is a little into the 70s, not to worry, we still love it. And the colour is perfect for autumn, complete with seasonal flowers and leaves.

16. MODERN OUTLOOK

In modern interiors, where you have sleek glossy lacquer furniture, don't be afraid to go for an eye catching colour which can be integrated with the help of accent rugs that have the same colour.

17. GROWN UP CHIC

Close your eyes... now open them! Ta-da!! One of the most elegant settings I have seen recently. I am not sure why the carpet is not sitting under the sofa; I would have liked it to. The blue-grey wall and the brass accents throughout the room (pendants, coffee table, kitchen units) make this room a winner for me. Interior design was by Athena Calderone of Rawlins Calderone Design and the photos are by Christopher Sturman for Harper's Bazaar.

18. Perfect Balance

This fun space designed by Jimmie Martin & McCoy and featured in Nuevo Estilo balances classic neutrals and bold components with lively results. The Chesterfield sofa. is. just. perfect.

19. A BIT MASCULINE

If you are worried that pink velvet is not going to be a hit with your other half, try a cool dark coloured velvet Chesterfield. Not only are they surprisingly comfortable, they are easier to maintain as you don't have to get the back cushions in shape all the time.

20. VELVET SOFA AND SCANDINAVIAN STYLE

Yes, velvet sofas can even work well in a minimalist Scandi home as shown here in the photo from the Design Files.
