Although it can be prevented, limescale can accumulate in several spots in your home without you realizing it. And although it seems trivial, thick limescale can affect the quality and quantity of the water flowing through it.
When it happens, you will experience unpleasant sensations every time you use the water to the point that it can annoy you. In fact, you may have experienced something like this because there are several spots in your home that have thick limescale and you don’t even realize it.
To avoid something like that from happening, you can follow the following 7 easy steps to remove thick limescale in your home.

Identify the affected areas
The first easy step on how to remove thick limescale in your home is to identify the affected areas. In this case, limescale usually builds up in areas that are exposed to water very frequently.
So, you can expect to find thick limescale deposits in your bathrooms and kitchens. It means that you should first investigate several spots that are frequently exposed to water such as bathroom tiles, showerheads, shower doors, and water taps in your bathrooms.
As for your kitchens, limescale deposits can usually be found in kettles, coffee makers, dishwashers as well as water taps.
Gather the right cleaning supplies
The second easy step to remove thick limescale in your home is to gather the right cleaning supplies. Since removing thick limescale can be a very challenging task, you need some specific cleaning supplies.
In this case, first you will need white vinegar or lemon juice to dissolve the limescale deposit and baking soda to be used when scrubbing them. Then, you need some cleaning tools such as a cleaning brush or a used toothbrush for scrubbing the deposits and a clean cloth or sponge to wipe the surfaces that you clean.
As for protection, you may need a pair of protective gloves and some plastic bags for soaking shower heads and water taps.
Soak the surface
Then, the third easy step to remove thick limescale in your home is to soak the surface that has limescale deposits to clean. To soak the surfaces of shower heads or water taps, you can use plastic bags that have been filled with white vinegar and tie them with rubber bands.
It’s recommended to soak the shower heads or water taps overnight to let the white vinegar break the limescale deposits down. As for a flat surface such as a dishwasher and shower door, you can use a cloth that has been soaked with white vinegar or lemon juice and lay it on the surface overnight.
Scrub away the limescale
Next, the fourth easy step to remove thick limescale in your home is to scrub away the limescale. To do this step, you only need to scrub the spots which have limescale deposits using a cleaning brush or a used toothbrush that you have prepared before in a circular motion.
If the limescale deposits are too thick, then you can sprinkle the baking soda that you have prepared before over the surfaces before scrubbing them. You have to do this step until there’s no limescale deposit anymore in those surfaces.
Use a commercial limescale remover product for stubborn deposits
If you have done the third and fourth steps but there are still some stubborn deposits that won’t go away, then you can try using a commercial limescale remover product for them.
This is because such a product has been tested and gone through research and development for quite some time before it’s proven to be best in cleaning even the most stubborn limescale deposits.
You can get such a product from a local store selling cleaning supplies, so it shouldn’t be a problem to get your hands on it.
To apply it, you only need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions that come with the product, but they usually require you to do steps similar to the third and fourth steps above before rinsing the surfaces clean.
Rinse and dry the area
Then, the sixth step to remove thick limescale in your home is to rinse and dry the area that has had the limescale deposits scrubbed away. To do this step, you just have to wipe the surfaces clean with a clean, damp cloth. After that, you just need to dry the surfaces by wiping them clean with a dry, clean microfiber cloth.
Prevent future limescale build up
Everything is clean now, but you will have to repeat the first through the sixth steps in the near future if you don’t perform the seventh step that is needed to prevent future build up.
For this step, you may need to change your habit of using water taps and showerheads. For example, you have to get into the habit of wiping the surfaces of water taps after using them.
Besides, you can start adding a regular job of cleaning water taps as in the first to sixth steps above to your list of cleaning jobs that you have to do regularly even though there’s still no visible limescale deposit.
